Argentine - San Juan

San Juan

San Juan is in the middle of a desert, and I can't
imagine how people can live there all year round. It
is so hot that it encourages you to do absolutely
nothing but sit in the shade and sip fruit juices or
mate, the local herbal tea. Even the wind provides o
relief because it's as hot as a hair drier. Yesterday
the temperature reached 37 degrees, and apparently
that's bearable, as some days in the height of Summer
they can reach 45 degrees! The highlight of our visit
was the Ischigualasto national park, with the
out-of-this-world Valle de Luna geological formation.
It reminded me a little of the grand canyon...not that
I've been there, but I was thinking of John Wayne
movies all the same. The park is a mecca for
archeologists, and is full of fossils, including one
of the oldest over recovered.
On our way back, we stopped at this place of worship called the Difunta Correa, a sanctuary where a Mrs Correa died in the desert, following her soldier husband around the country with her baby. When she died, she was found with her baby still feeding at her breast, and this was deemed miraculous, and the site where she died has become a bit like Lourdes. Only the Vatican don't believe in the Difunta Correa because she's not officially recognised as a saint. I dunno. To me it's more believable than the immaculate conception, but I suppose there's no point in arguing. People leave gifts of all sorts there, including trucks and car parts, and we even saw Diego Maradonna's football jersey! Now, if it was up to Argentinians, he would be canonised.
