Tucuman

Tucuman is the place where the Argentine declaration of independence was signed. We stayed here 3 nights, and enjoyed the city's buzz. It is dead quiet between 12.00 and 16.00 and then the whole city comes to life. It's too hot during the day and its inhabitants are too laid back to lift a finger when the sun reaches its peak. I don't blame them.
I do think that perhaps we've been travelling long enough, which will sound totally spoilt to anyone reading this, if indeed anyone even bothers with my senseless ramblings. Lately I've found that there have been discrepancies between our guide book's enthusiastic descriptions and the reality. For instance, we went to visit San Jose de Lules, these supposedly hauntingly magical jesuit ruins about 20km out of Tucuman. First, it took us about an hour to cover these 20km because although we were the only bloody tourists on the bus, the driver forgot to tell us when to get off and so we had to get on another bus going in the opposite direction that went all through the village. And when we were dropped off it was immediately apparent that there really wasn't much to write home about. There were a couple of horses grazing, a few hens, an old bare church full of stinking stray dogs, and next to that a pile of rubble and busts of prominent figures, none of which I'd ever heard of. Oh, and a museum which consisted of a handful of rusty nails and some broken wine bottles that the jesuits drank from. The only reason we stayed longer than 10 minutes was because I needed to find a suitably sheltered spot for a pee.
