After about a month and a half in Southeast Asia,
we've started the Australian leg of our trip. We've
been in Cairns for two days and it's such a relief for
me to be somewhere more familiar and easy-going. I can
understand people (sometimes), read menus, kind of
tell if I'm being ripped off. We went straight for a
snorkelling trip on the Great Barrier Reef and had an
amazing day. For once I had a diving mask that
actually corrected my eyesight, so I saw everything
clearly and wasn't freaked out by my own shadow
reflected on the bottom, thinking it's a monster from
the deep. The highlight was a helicopter trip over the
reef, which Christophe also did. This is a great
achievement because he even gets scared on ski-lifts.
He really enjoyed it too and didn't even break into a
cold sweat. Apart from the corals, we saw reef sharks
and rays and turtles and all sorts of funky coloured
fish whose names I couldn't tell you. The colours of
the reef from above are breathtaking, and it was a
pretty overwhelming experience. It was one of those
days when you can't stop smiling.
